Addiction is a chronic illness. Individuals who suffer from addiction, including behavioral addictions, have an uncontrollable desire and compulsion to use hazardous substances or have to involve in harmful activities despite knowing the negative consequences these may have on their health. Currently, the application of advanced mobile health technologies has the potential to improve community health and reach populations easily. Usable, and accessible mHealth technologies and online materials may cope with the limited health literacy skills of vulnerable or marginalized populations such as addicted ones. Advances in digital and mHealth technologies have created numerous opportunities to assess and modify health behavior and thus acceleration the ability of science to understand and contribute to improved health behavior and health outcomes. These technologies are rapidly changing how we comprehend and promote health. A robust line of research is needed to examine how mHealth may enhance our understanding and treatment of addiction. Nevertheless, awareness of healthcare professionals and evidence on the availability, effectiveness, and implementation of such technologies in addictive disorders therapy is limited.
Thus, there is an emergent need for exploring more evidence on the cost-effectiveness, functionality, and implementation methods of digital health technologies.
The goal of this Research Topic is to generate knowledge on how online resources and mobile health technologies can be leveraged to reach, educate, and cure people with addictive disorders. We hope to learn how mobile technology-based tools and interventions can assist therapists as well as the populations with addictive disorders. To this end, we are seeking research that focused on improving addictive disorders via mHealth technologies.
We welcome a range of contribution types (research articles, reviews, case reports, opinions, perspectives etc.) that cover the following sub-themes:
1. Digital health approaches for understanding human behavior
2. Methods of mobile health interventions
3. understanding the mobile health technology assessment, and clinical paths of addictive disorders
4. Timely opportunities in mobile health and its clinical application in addictive disorders.
5. The application of digital health to the assessment and treatment of addictive disorders
6. Mobile support groups in addictive disorders therapy
7. Using mobile health to enhance eHealth literacy of people with addictive disorders
8. Online experience sharing and offering ongoing encouragement in addictive disorders
9. Counseling in addictive disorders through mobile applications
