Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is the main cause of severe visual impairment and blindness in children. Based on the development of basic and clinical research, advancements have been made in the treatment of ROP. Other than high concentration oxygen supplement and oxidative stress, factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), placental growth factor (PGF), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and erythropoietin (EPO), have also been proven to play a key role in the pathogenesis of ROP. Moreover, benefited from basic study, anti-VEGF antibody therapy has been developed and widely applied, and the treatment of ROP do not need to only rely on cryoablation and laser photocoagulation. The above advances greatly inspired the confidence of the ROP's researchers. Overall, the progress of basic research has provided a solid theoretical basis for clinical prevention and treatment of ROP.
According to the latest data, the incidence of ROP still remains very high for low-birth-weight and premature infants. Undeniably, early diagnosis, prediction and prevention of ROP are still great challenges for pediatricians.
